Post WWI economy was characterized by lean times in the United State. Family on my father’s side were devout Catholics, and although my great-grandmother married, her sisters became sisters, and were provided for via life in a convent, and remained there until their passing. This was one strategy for women to cope with the Great Depression. This economic downturn was largely blamed upon then President Hoover, then began its recovery as WW2 loomed, increasing military spending and the creation of job opportunities for women, given that men were being conscripted to serve.
Germany also experienced tremendous economic challenge at that time, characterized by hyperinflation and exacerbated by the WW1 reparation payments exacted by conditions of the Versailles Treaty. The German people blamed their economic downturn on the ruling Weimar Republic, socialists, Jews, and liberals, often lumping the latter three together. The Nazis had a different provision option for German women though, as long as they met certain a particular set of criteria.
In 1935, the Nazi Lebensborn Program was created in order to promote the growth of Germany’s “Aryan” population. Initially, the program’s goal was to encourage SS men to have large families (at least 4 children) and to discourage unmarried pregnant women from having abortions. SS men were considered to be “biologically elite”. The women were screened for “hereditary health” regarding personal or family history of illness—physical or mental, disabilities, or heritage other than “purely” Aryan. The married SS men were promised eligibility for financial assistance for having large families, and those unmarried were required to have their brides’ ancestry screened to insure their children would be “racially valuable” before being allowed to marry. Single and pregnant women were also accepted into the program if they met that same criteria and would be provided a comfortable living space at a Lebensborn facility, food, prenatal care, delivery of their babies, recovery care, financial support, and adoption services, all in an environment of anonymity and discretion. Single women not yet pregnant were encouraged to engage in relations with SS soldiers for the purpose of producing children for Hitler. Sometimes these men were married and already had children of their own. In a nutshell, disaster ensued (babies kidnapped, records destroyed, mothers earning metals for having babies, with gemstones of increasing value with each birth, euthanasia of “substandard” babies, etc. ), and I encourage the reader to find a book or video about this program.
The above observations cause me to consider our current political situation in which the next administration promises to “make America great again”, included who this administration and its supporters ascribe blame to for America not being “great” now, according to the administration’s expressed assessment, and the plan to restore this “greatness”.
The next Trump administration, with its agenda to deport undocumented workers and families (which make up approximately half of all US farm employees according to most estimates) is planning development of “large scale detention facilities”. Maybe I am alone in this, but when I read, “large scale detention facilities”, I understand this to be prison camps. So once these folks are placed in the camps, fresh produce ready for harvest rots on the ground, food shortages and inflated prices for food result—not to mention the looming inflation anticipated from the Trump administration’s planned tariffs, the economy takes a nosedive, and the nation finds itself in a collective poverty crisis. Once the detained people are deported, how might these “facilities” be repurposed? Given the reversal of Roe v Wade and Project 2025’s potential to make contraception unaffordable for people of low income (which may be most of the youthfully fertile among us who will become increasingly priced out of the housing market in an economic downturn), could a planned future use for these camps be for economically challenged pregnant women? Would their children also be taken from them, and quite possibly trafficked like on Epstein’s Little St James Island compound? Would poor women (and, let’s face it—girls--as this is the party ever seeking to lower the age of marriage eligibility for females) be offered survival “perks” in exchange for consorting with soldiers and law enforcement Trump loyalists? What a huge strategic military enlistment and law enforcement officers recruiting enticement for right-wing incels THAT would be.
Trump’s Hitler-esque statement that immigrants, “are poisoning the blood of our country” and the responding cheers to this statement at his rallies make it clear who he and his supporters ascribe our nation’s ills to, which is as racist as it is unsubstantiated. Also, Ivana Trump’s(rest her soul) testimony that he kept a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, “My New Order” by his bed should give everyone pause regarding whose playbook he’s following, and where he wants to take us as a nation. It is my opinion, from a historical perspective, it’s not looking “great”. Every day is a hold a new opportunity to resist and resist we must.
Here’s a drawing of a kid with some fresh produce. Call me “woke”. Or call me “deep state”. I hope all our children are so blessed to be able to eat well in America
